Numerical Simulations of Fuel Shape Change and Swirling Flows in Paraffin/Oxygen Hybrid Rocket Engines

Abstract The objective of this work is to describe and validate a numerical axisymmetric approach for the simulation hybrid rocket engines (HREs), based on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations, with sub-models fluid–surface interaction, radiation, chemistry, turbulence. Fuel grain consumption considered both radial axial directions swirl injection oxidizer are simulated. Firing tests two different paraffin–oxygen rockets considered. First, rebuilding fuel profile, regression rate pressure axial-injected HREs performed, yielding reasonable agreement available experimental data. Then, same model applied swirl-injected employed analyze flowfield variation intensity. A validation through small-scale firing also performed.
